Sunday’s game was a tempestuous affair, with both sides reduced to 10-men for harsh dismissals.

Tonelli was given a second yellow card for a high foot on Nicola Sansone, but it was his behaviour afterward which saw him given a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The centre-back made a handcuffs gesture to the fourth official as he left the field, suggesting his side were being victimised by officials, and the Lega Serie A has slapped him with a three-match ban.

Former Inter Coach Jose Mourinho received a three-game touchline ban in 2010 for making the same gesture.

Simone Missiroli was also dismissed during the match, but received a one-game ban, along with Atalanta’s Andrea Conti, Evangelos Moras of Verona and Chievo defender Nicolas Spolli, who were also shown red at the weekend.

Marco Benassi of Torino, Genoa’s Armando Izzo, Milan playmaker Riccardo Montolivo, Giampiero Pinzi of Chievo, Inter’s Marcelo Brozovic and Empoli midfielder Riccardo Saponara all picked up a fifth booking of the season and will miss the next match.

Emil Hallfredsson of Udinese picked up his 10th booking of the campaign, missing he will also miss next weekend’s fixtures.

After reviewing television evidence, it was decided Torino’s Andrea Belotti had not dived to win his side’s penalty against Carpi, but had “unintentionally slipped”, so he will not be fined.

Inter were fined €15,000 for “chants expressive of discrimination based on territorial origin” during their win over Sampdoria.
Napoli received the same sanction after fans threw firecrackers at Milan supporters during yesterday’s 1-1 draw.
