Sampdoria midfielder Morten Thorsby has decided to change his shirt number from 18 to 2 for a very specific reason. ‘It refers to the primary objective of the Paris agreement to limit global warming’.

The Norwegian has spent the last two seasons with Sampdoria and signed a deal until June 2023 upon his arrival.

Thorsby is the founder of We Play Green, aiming at ‘creating awareness, improving knowledge, or inspiring the football fan community on environmentally related issues’.

Now, the midfielder has decided to change his shirt number ahead of 2021-22 and has picked No. 2 in referral to the Paris Agreement.

“Changing my shirt to number 2 referes to the primary objective of the Paris agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees,” he said on Instagram.

“I am fully aware that changing my number does not change anything. I hope however that the symbolic value will create awareness and attention.

“Only rapid and drastic action in the next decade can prevent climate catastrophe. There is no longer time for excuses, we all have to do our part.”
