Erick Thohir has reiterated Inter’s intention is to respect UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules, as he reflects on taking the club digital.

The Nerazzurri held their shareholders’ meeting today and afterwards the owner and a number of his staff faced the media.

At the Press conference, Financial Fair Play was a topic particularly up for discussion.

“We are aware of Financial Fair Play as we experienced similar situations in the States. We respect rules and FFP contains a positive message,” Thohir began to reporters today.

“FFP ensures that clubs are not toys in just a few people’s hands – that is a risk. The image of the city could fall into decline. Inter is a big brand and we have to protect it.

“In terms of talking about players, I say that we must aim to return to being in the world’s top 10.

“In the last 11 months, we bought players like Hernanes and Danilo D’Ambrosio spending a lot of money.

“We bought more players because we wanted to have a more competitive squad. And we lowered our average age to 26.4 years.

“It’s important to build a competitive team but it’s not easy. Every Italian club will find themselves facing the issue when the new TV deal in the UK will be fulfilled. So we have to be careful to parameters but at the same time try to reach our targets.

“For instance, if in January we had the same injuries as now, it would have been difficult. We tried to balance the squad and we did it.

“We also make sure that players are ready to be part of Inter. If things didn’t go well, players should be the first to realise that Inter is not the right place for them.

“I can’t be one of those leaders who blames everyone when things go wrong. As a leader, I must understand where I got it wrong and where the management got it wrong.

“That’s why we take decisions all together. We must keep going up in the table, but in the end the most important thing is having built a strong team.

“It’s not my fault [if there are too many foreigners]. It’s part of the 106 years of history of this club. We have some players like Bonazzoli, Sciacca and Palazzi who played for the Under-19 side.

“But the most important thing is how we go on to the pitch. The same applies to management. We must be competitive.

“I keep saying that football is not just a sport anymore – it’s media and users. It’s important on and off the pitch. We must not only focus on football all the time, because the stadium is not only a pitch.

“Then there are fans. My daughter only works on her laptop. She doesn’t read newspapers and doesn’t watch TV. For me it’s difficult, for her it’s normal.

“The world is changing and in order to involve our fans more and more we need to go digital more and more. And everybody’s background here is very important to give life to our strategy – we don’t want to reach only Italian supporters but every fan in the world.

“There will be an increasing numbers of foreign supporters coming to the stadium to watch Inter. Yesterday there was a group of Asian fans there to watch the game. Imagine 264m fans that want to come.”
