Thohir erroneously referred to Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard as the players that made him become an Inter fan, prompting widespread ridicule on social media.

“I did that interview on August 17 in Jakarta,” the Nerazzurri President told the Straits Times.

“The Asian Games countdown was a day before and I was under a lot of pressure, I had so many things in my head.

“All this provoked my slip on Inter’s ‘Dutch trio’. I’d like to apologise to the fans.

“I know the difference between German and Dutch players, and I know perfectly well that Inter have never had a Dutch trio.”

Thohir’s counter-claim could also be deemed wrong as the Nerazzurri had their own Dutch trio of Aron Winter, Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp in the mid-1990s.
