Inter President Erick Thohir “wouldn’t say being first is a surprise” but “the objective is the Champions League”.

The Nerazzurri sit top of Serie A, with the best defence in the League, but the Indonesian patron insists the aim is still top-three.

“The goal is to get into the Champions League, and to do that you have to be in the top-three,” Thohir told Mediaset.

“The goal is to get into the Champions League, and to do that you have to be in the top-three,” Thohir told Mediaset.

“I wouldn’t say being first is a surprise, but it’s a good position to be in. If we finish top it would be magnificent, but the objective is the Champions League.

“If you’re leading after 15 games you can hardly not be satisfied. Obviously the most important thing is to be consistent in our approach.

“Inter are strong, made up of fighters, and that’s important for me and the fans. We always give 100 per cent, and want to win every game.”

The Nerazzurri have had a number of red cards this season, perhaps they’re taking that fighting spirit too far?

“I wouldn’t say so. It’s important for the referees to keep the game fun and correct. A good referee doesn’t want to be the centre of attention, because he’s part of the play.

“I’m part of Inter, but we take decisions together, just as the referee is part of the game. That Inter finish with 10 almost every match is curious, but it’s not right.

“The players, staff and the Coach Roberto Mancini should respect the referees, and the referees should respect the game.”
