Recent rumours that the 44-year-old was thinking of selling back to Massimo Moratti have been played down, and today he has reiterated the passion that drew him to the club.
“I was contacted from the United States and asked if I was interested in investing into a European [football] club of world-wide fame,” Thohir has said, in an interview with a Jakarta broadcast on 101JakFM.
“It was Inter, and I couldn't believe it, because I'd always followed Serie A and the Nerazzurri in particular.
“How could I not have been interested? Inter are a global brand, recognised everywhere in the world.
“It was an honour for me, but also a responsibility. That's why I'm trying to do my best with this club, and I'll keep doing that because that's what it deserves.
“At the beginning of this adventure I thought that the President should be Angelomario Moratti, but [his father] Massimo Moratti told me that was not the case.
“He said that I was the majority shareholder, so it was only fair that I should be the President.
“It really was a great honour, among other things because the Nerazzurri supporters are fantastic and deserve the best. We're working to make them happy.”
The tycoon was encouraged by a supporter on the phone not to sell Mateo Kovacic, and he took the directive humorously.
“Do you want me to buy [Yaya] Toure too?”
