Thohir: ‘Icardi not for sale’

President Erick Thohir says Inter won’t sell Mauro Icardi to Manchester United or anyone else – “he’s part of our project”.

The Argentinian has been linked with a €40m move to Old Trafford, as it’s thought Jose Mourinho is an admirer and could take over the Red Devils in the summer.

“Icardi is part of our project,” Thohir insisted in an interview with Sky.

“[Jeison] Murillo, Miranda, [Gary] Medel, [Geoffrey] Kondogbia, for example, are part of a project, as well as Mauro.

“The same applies to [Alex] Telles, [Stevan] Jovetic, [Adem] Ljajic and others. We have a plan which includes them all.

“For example, [Rodrigo] Palacio has renewed and we’re talking to [Yuto] Nagatomo now. We want to build a core which will remain for two or three seasons.

“We can’t change the team every year, so we have to keep the core of the squad and maybe buy two or three players.”

The Indonesian patron also moved to assure fans that the situation wouldn’t change should the Nerazzurri fail to qualify for the Champions League this year.

“We have a plan for whatever situation arises. One [plan] in the event that we qualify for the Champions League, one for the Europa League and one if we’re out of Europe altogether.

“Of course, if that happened it wouldn't be good.

“Our revenue is growing and we’ve built a competitive team. Obviously if we got into the Champions League we’d be able to invest more.”

The President also cleared-up confusion over the club’s ownership, with reports that he’s been seeking new investors.

“I’ve seen a bit of confusion about this,” Thohir said.

“We’re looking for global sponsors, in Indonesia, China – everywhere. Yes, we’re looking for partners, but as sponsors.

“The situation is changing in China now, they’re breaking records in terms of money spent to buy players, they’re building a competitive League and it’s good for a club to build connections with them.

“We haven’t spoken to anyone about buying shares.

“In future you never know, we can’t close our eyes because the world is becoming increasingly connected.

“That’s a good thing if we can find partners to help Inter grow.”
