The hosts had largely dominated the game, taking the lead through Ebrima Colley with a ricochet off Salvatore Sirigu and the woodwork, also wasting several more chances to add to their tally.

“There are many regrets, because we didn’t make the most of our scoring opportunities and failed to kill the game,” Thiago Motta told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am nonetheless confident in seeing this kind of attitude from my team. This is a performance that will nonetheless boost our self-esteem.

“The first half was tactically a stalemate and Genoa defended very well.”

The positive for Spezia was the return to fitness of Colley after a long injury lay-off, even if the goal will be awarded to Sirigu for the ricochet off the post.
