Dario Canovi, the agent of sought-after Bologna coach Thiago Motta has no doubts that his client will go on to manage in the Champions League, and jokes that he will ‘kick his a**’ if he doesn’t.

Motta has received plenty of praise for his recent work in Serie A with Bologna, who currently sit in fourth place in the league table with a five-point advantage over Roma in fifth.

However, Canovi believes that the former Inter and PSG midfielder was always destined to become an elite level coach.

“I don’t mean to blow my own trumpet, but even back when he was still playing I was telling him that he would go on to become one of the greatest coaches in Europe,” Canovi said in a recent interview with Milannews.it

“After 50 years in football, I’d like to think I know a little bit about it, and I’m not talking about football, but people. Thiago is such an intelligent person, it was always going to be his destiny to go down this path.”

Motta has been linked with a move to a number of clubs across Europe over the 2023-24 season, most regularly to Milan

However, the set-up and the environment surrounding Bologna has been crucial to Motta’s rise, Canovi says.

“It certainly makes the task easier. There is a nice environment, as well as a good union between the players. Just from watching them celebrate, you can see the relationship between them and Thiago, you see how much respect and affection there is.

“I told him a little while back, if you die before coaching in the Champions League, I’ll come down from the skies and kick your a**. There won’t be any risk though, because I’m certain he will coach in the Champions League.”

Recent reports suggest that Bologna are keen to tie Motta down to a new and improved contract. And, if he does decide to stay on for next season, and if the Rossoblu can continue their strong form until the end of the season, Motta may go on to achieve his goal of coaching in Europe while still at the Dall’Ara.
