Milan star Theo Hernandez explains the controversial goal celebration after beating Napoli and assures ‘people don’t see the work Rafael Leao does in training.’
The Rossoneri have now won six of the last seven rounds and a single goal from the France international was enough to push the Partenopei aside 1-0 at San Siro this evening.
“I am very happy. We knew it was a very difficult game, as Napoli are tough, but we worked well and that is why we won,” Theo Hernandez told DAZN.
“We all know that there was a complicated period for us, but we worked every day to give our best and that work is helping us get the results now.”
It was such a well-worked goal completing a give and go with Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud down the left flank, so did they prepare that move in training?
“No, we did not prepare anything. My job is to play well, make the fans and the team happy.”
Theo’s celebration raised a few eyebrows, as first he put his hands to his ears waiting to hear the crowd, then made ‘blah blah’ moves with his hands to reflect the chattering classes. Who was that aimed at?
“It was not aimed at anyone, I do my talking on the pitch. It’s true there were some games where I did not do that well, but I am trying to improve.”
Leao provided the assist this evening, but is scoring far fewer goals than he is accustomed to at Milan this season.
“We know Rafa is an incredible player. He might not always score, but he provides crucial assists. People don’t see the work he does in training every day.”
Milan are now consolidating third place and could even close the gap on Juventus in second, so are they still in the Scudetto race?
“No, we do our job, we try to win every game and that’s all. Our next focus is on Thursday.”
That will be the Europa League play-off against Stade Rennais, as Milan dropped down from the Champions League to this competition after finishing third in their group.
