The last Milan derby ended in controversy with bans and fines for Theo Hernandez, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez and all three players are likely to be involved tonight, adding another layer of intrigue to an already tense fixture.
Milan and Inter will meet for the third time this season. The Rossoneri are unbeaten against their city rivals this term after drawing the first Serie A match of the campaign and winning the second one played on February 5. The last meeting between the Milanese sides had a controversial end after Theo Hernandez saw red for a nasty tackle on Denzel Dumfries.
The France defender came to blows with Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni while going to the tunnel. A video that circulated on social media after the match appeared to show the Inter striker spitting at the Milan defender, but the Argentinean was cleared of allegations and received a €10,000 fine.
Bastoni, who had been subbed off earlier in the second half, received a two-match ban for allegedly telling the referees and his assistants, “you were rubbish.” Simone Inzaghi was suspended for one game and fined €15,000 for confronting the referee inside the dressing room after the final whistle.
Theo received a one-match following his red card and was fined €5,000 for his ‘provocative attitude towards the opposing fans’ while he was on his way out of the pitch. They will all meet in tonight’s derby again, but they’ll need to keep their nerves this time.
