Italian sports papers analysed Inter‘s 2-0 loss against Liverpool, highlighting disappointing performances from three Nerazzurri.

Simone Inzaghi’s side dominated the game for a long time, but goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a crucial 2-0 victory which will see them progress to the quarter-finals even with a draw at Anfield Road in March.

La Gazzetta dello Sport and Tuttosport blamed Alessandro Bastoni for Firmino’s opener. The Brazilian striker got to the ball before the Nerazzurri defender, finding the net at the far post with a header. Bastoni was rated 5/10 by both papers, the same rating as Lautaro Martinez on Tuttosport.

Champions League | Inter 0-2 Liverpool: Clinical finishing the difference

The Turin-based paper highlighted how the Argentineastriker ‘fought hard during the game’ but once again failed to find the net in a Champions League fixture. His last goal in the competition is dated back to November 2020 against Real Madrid.

Martinez was rated 5.5 by Il Corriere dello Sport and got a surprising 6.5 from La Gazzetta dello Sport, while Sanchez, who replaced El Toro in the second half, was rated 5 by the pink paper. Edin Dzeko also failed to impress and didn’t get passing grades in any of the three Italian papers.

The former Manchester City and Roma star had scored three consecutive goals against Liverpool, but Virgil van Dijk managed to nullify the 35-year-old. The Liverpool defender resulted in one of the best players on the pitch. Both he and Ivan Perisic were rated 7 by La Gazzetta dello Sport. Van Dijk was called ‘an insuperable giant’ by Gazzetta. Firmino was also rated 7. He was introduced after the break and got the job done in a few minutes. After his goal, Inter collapsed.

  1. Dzeco and bastoni don’t deserve more than 2rating.for me dzeco was worst.dzeco most time we placed himself in offside position that makes it difficult for mfieders to give him ball.and when is not in offside position look very sluggish.i think he should go for medical check.he doesn’t look sharp and fit

  2. Milan neutralized them as well, and even score at Anfield, but pool are hideously dangerous given even the smallest glimpse of goal.

Sad that Inter will soon only have the league to focus on, after we beat them in the coppa. I was hoping they would get last pool and have to keep CL on their mind… It’s not like they’d win it anyway. Now they just might get the scudetto, if the refs keep punishing Milan and Napoli like at Spezia

  3. Reality is that Dzeko is being overplayed by Inzaghi. The coach needs to take responsibility for how he is managing the team. He is too old now to play 99 minutes every 3 days. Yet he insists in not rotating players.

He needed speed vs Liverpool defense and it was painfully clear that Dzeko couldn’t match it. Inter plays well then they seem to lack creativity in managing substitutions when things don’t work.

  4. Must i remind everyone that the best team Inter has beaten in Champions League over the last decade was Tottenham ? And knowing that did you actually think Inter had a chance of beating Liverpool ? you must be delusional ! They only scored 8 goals so far in Champions league – 6 against a team from Moldova! They have not beaten a pot A team in over a decade …Inter is just a provincial team with no ambition to make the quarterfinals since it’s been over a decade since they last did that too !
