Chelsea broke the bank to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton for €73.55m today, but in May 2020 Napoli insulted and belittled the player and Getafe on Twitter.
Cucurella had his medical with the Stamford Bridge giants, ready to complete a transfer worth £55m (€65.25m) plus up to £7m in add-ons (€8.3m).
The deal was struck after a bidding war with Manchester City, following the 24-year-old’s one and only Premier League season.
It all could’ve been very different, as Napoli fans on social media today remembered the time only two years ago that their club took the trouble of actively insulting him on Twitter.
After reports emerged that Getafe had met with Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis to discuss signing Cucurella, the club released this statement.
“It is a hoax, just Fake News. De Laurentiis doesn’t even know who the President of Getafe is and has never spoken to his collaborators about this Cucurella fellow.”
Even at the time, the tone of the statement was considered unnecessarily insulting and belittling towards a club and player, but it seems even worse in hindsight knowing how far he has climbed up the football pecking order.
How is that an insulting tweet, exactly? They just shutdown the report conclusively. The fact that Chelsea paid whatever it is that Brighton asked for is what is laughable. Good player, but 50m?
