Tiemoue Bakayoko is not having a good season with Milan and poor performances are not the only reason why he’s currently sidelined in the Lombardy capital.

The 27-year-old French midfielder has made 13 Serie A appearances this season for the Rossoneri, but only five of those games were starts and he has not featured since the 2-1 loss to Spezia last month. He has only played the full 90 minutes of a match twice this campaign, and he didn’t impress either time.

As highlighted by Rudy Galetti, one of the main reasons why Milan are not playing Bakayoko is because the conditional obligation to buy clause attached to his loan deal is linked to the number of appearances made.

The Frenchman joined the Rossoneri from the Blues last summer in a €2m loan deal, with the conditional obligation to buy clause set at around €15-20m. The Milanese club have no intention of making his stay permanent, and so it’s unlikely he’ll receive regular playing time now under Stefano Pioli.

  1. He has been disappointing. He takes home a big wage and he isn’t worth 5 million euros let alone 20! Pobega would have been a better option.

  2. And let this one be a lesson for management and Maldini. They have done a lot of good things but made a serious error on him by wasting so much time and money for his signing.

Even with those 2m euros we could’ve bought a more useful youngster! He’s been utterly useless.

  3. Don’t know why he keeps getting chances everywhere. He has to be one of the sloppiest, least technically gifted midfielders in Serie A.

  4. Is it not possible to just send him back to Chelsea then? We’re not buying him, and we’re not going to play him, so why not terminate the deal early?

  5. @Bunga2 the reason why we still keep him is for squad depth, especially in the last round of serie A and coppa. But with our starting MF all currently are fit to play, he was forced to be sidelined.

  6. What a farce.

This is modern football. All these ridiculous clauses and silly games. Bakayoko has shown potential both at Monaco and his first stint at Milan. The fact that he’s not reaching that potential now is a failure of the club and his agent for moving him around so much.

Could you imagine an actual business doing this? Jimmy in sales has to sit at home all day to stop him getting a bonus. It’s ridiculous. In football we think it’s “clever business”. In actual business it would be considered grossly incompetent.
