Inter have collected just 13 points in nine Serie A in 2022, but there’s more behind their collapse in the new year.

The Nerazzurri are no longer table leaders as, even by winning their game in hand against Bologna, they would remain one point behind their city rivals Milan. The Nerazzurri had won the last six games of 2021, scoring 17 goals conceding none.

Their trend has overturned in the new year where they have earned just 13 points in nine games. Juventus have collected 22 (the best in Serie A), one more than Napoli and Milan.

The Nerazzurri paid a high price for their striker’s goal drought in 2022 with Lautaro Martinez scoring his first four goals of the year last week. Edin Dzeko has had a similar record since January, with four goals in nine Serie A appearances.

Their defensive solidity is also under question as the Nerazzurri kept just three clean sheets in 2022, conceding eight goals in the process. They had conceded 15 in the opening 19 games of the campaign. Inter won the Supercoppa against Juventus in January, but were also eliminated by Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16.

The defending Serie A champions tend to struggle when playing without Marcelo Brozovic and earned just one point in the two games played without their playmaker. La Gazzetta dello Sport highlighted Inter’s issues to cope without the Croatia international, questioning their decision to send Stefano Sensi on loan to Sampdoria in January.

  1. Fellow Interisti, you better hope that Salernitana does not get relegated otherwise how do you plan on breaking this winless streak next season ? Maybe this stat will explain why:

Lautaro Martinez has not scored a serie a goal against the top 19 teams in the league in over 3 months !!!!

  2. When a striker does not have above normal (for strikers) pace and running strength they struggle against top defenders, who these days can all run fast. This was very evident against Liverpool, where Liverpool were able to play a high defensive line because neither Martinez nor Dzeko worried the defense if they got in behind them because they had the speed to make up yards and catch up to them. The lovely goal Martinez scored came down to the accuracy of this shot (no minor skill) and the fact that Van Dyck froze and did not press him.

  3. Collapse? For real? Inter are 4 points out of first and have 1 more game to play compared the Milan and Napoli at positions 1 and 2. I don’t want Inter to win the scudetto this year, but it’s certainly not beyond their ability to do so. Again, collapse? Is the sky falling with a blood moon rising? The article is a bit of an overreach Sig. Bettoni.

  4. Technically Lautaro has scored against the top 19 in the last couple of weeks. If you wanted to exclude Salernitana, then your statement should be “…top 18 teams…”

Jeez where did you learn to count? Next you’ll be saying your team has 2 more scudetti than it actually has

  5. @AP
Salernitana is rock bottom at 20th. Sooooo, yes he hasn’t scored against a top 19 team in 3 months.
Where did YOU learn how to count. Anyone who thinks 38 is actually 36 clearly failed basic mathematics in grade school!
