The Capocannoniere, also known as the Paolo Rossi Award, is the award given to the player with the highest number of Serie A goals at the end of a season and Inter captain Lautaro Martinez won it this term.

The Argentinean striker wasn’t only the most prolific player in the league, but he also contributed to Inter’s 2023-24 Serie A title, the 20th in the club’s history.

Below are the top five players in the 2023-24 Serie A campaign.

Lautaro Martinez (24 Goals)

The Argentine and Inter striker currently won the Capocannoniere race with 24 goals, three more than his total tally from last season. With eight goals above second-placed Dusan Vhlahovic, Lautaro has proved to be the best striker in Serie A this term. This is the first time he’s won the top scorer award after finishing third and second with 21 goals each of the last two seasons.

As we already mentioned, Lautaro Martinez’s goals have been crucial to Inter’s Scudetto this term and in addition to his goals, he’s also contributed with six assists, which ranks him among the top 20 in terms of assists given.

While some bookmakers have been offering long-shot odds on other players who could have beaten the Argentine striker to the Capocannoniere title, you can visit this website to place realistic and informed wagers about the upcoming tournaments such as the Euros and the Copa America, where Lautaro will be involved.

Dusan Vlahovic (16 goals)

The €80m deal that saw Vlahovic move from Fiorentina to Juventus in January 2022 began to feel like it was not worth it. The 24-year-old Serbian striker only scored 10 Serie A goals in 2022-23 prompting Juventus to discuss a swap deal involving him and Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku. However, the deal collapsed, Lukaku moved to Roma, and perhaps Juventus could not be happier.

With 16 Serie A goals scored this season, Juventus will definitely not be attempting a swap again. It is safe to say that Vhlahovic is starting to yield good returns on the club’s investments, as his impact this season has been significant. Alongside his 16 league goals, he has also contributed three assists, resulting in 19 direct goal contributions in 33 league matches.

Victor Osimehn (15)

The Nigerian attacker led Napoli on a history-defining run to league glory with 26 goals last season, but he was unable to replicate that this term with 15 goals. Osimhen was not available in January as he took part in the AFCOn with his national team, Nigeria, and he’s expected to leave the club at the end of the season with a €130m clause.

Osimehn and Napoli’s performances this term have been subpar compared to last season’s, and the Partenopei even missed out on a European placement.

Olivier Giroud (15 goals)

When Milan signed Olivier Giroud in 2021, many fans and football pundits didn’t believe he would be a valuable addition to the team. He was 35 at that time and came from a disappointing spell at Chelsea. However, he went on to prove critics wrong, scoring 11 goals in his first season at the club, leading the Rossoneri to their first Scudetto in a decade.

This season, we’ve witnessed more brilliant displays from the French veteran. With 23 direct goal contributions (15 goals and eight assists), Giroud helped Milan secure a second-place finish in 2023-24. Sadly, he won’t be available for the club next season as he has decided to leave San Siro and join LAFC on a free transfer.

Albert Gudmundsson (14 goals)

It’s not every day you see a top-five goalscorer from a bottom-half team, but that is the case with Albert Gudmundsson. In his first Serie A season, the Iceland international massively helped Genoa secure a comfortable survival with several games to spare. The 27-year-old Icelandic attacker bagged 14 goals and provided four assists this season and was included by most Football Italia writers in the Team of the Season. Don’t be surprised when a top team comes to snap him up when the 2024 summer transfer window opens.
