Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini explained it was ‘a shock’ to lose Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of 2021-22 and was not happy about the timing of the transfer.

Both Leonardo Bonucci and Chiellini have recently commented on the Portuguese superstar’s farewell this summer.

Before and after the match against Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League, Bonucci said the Bianconeri need to find the ‘pre-CR7 spirit’ and admitted the 36-year-old made the players at the Allianz Stadium ‘subconsciously think his presence alone was enough to win games’.

Ronaldo arrived in 2018 and the Old Lady was hoping to take the final step in Europe, having lost two Champions League Finals during Max Allegri’s first stint at the club.

What’s behind Bonucci and Chiellini’s harsh words on Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo left with two Scudetti, the Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana, but never managed to go beyond the last 16 in the Champions League with Juve.

Chiellini spoke to DAZN about his move this summer and explained it was ‘a shock’ to the system at Continassa.

“It certainly would’ve been better if he had gone earlier so we could prepare. Unfortunately, we paid a price for that,” Chiellini told the broadcaster.

“It does create a shock to the system, and we lost points in the opening games because of that. If he’d left on August 1, then we would have had time to reorganise and be ready for the start of the season.”

Chiellini was clearly unhappy with Ronaldo’s exit, as the Portugal captain returned to Manchester United in August.

Many of the Juventus stars sent messages to the superstar on social media, even Manuel Locatelli, who had just arrived at the Bianconeri this summer.

Juventus captain Chiellini, however, decided not to send a message to the former Bianconeri striker, who decided to leave the club after the start of the season and with only a few days left of the transfer market.

Juventus are currently recovering from a poor start and host reigning champions Inter in Serie A this weekend.

The Bianconeri are currently seventh in Serie A and are unbeaten in eight games, including four wins on the bounce in the league.

4 thought on “The detail that proves Chiellini wasn’t pleased with Ronaldo’s exit”
  1. Its more like the driver bailed at start of the road trip. Ronaldo’s unprofessional exit is a stain on his history at juve.

  2. @Ranajaya. Chiellini has done more for Juventus than any money you can talk of. I can’t stand that club, but Chiellini has done so much for Juventus that he is allowed to speak his mind. He is Juventus through and through, and a timeless legend.
