‘The best by a distance’ – Chiesa stands out in Italy draw with Ukraine

Federico Chiesa put in a shift to try and help Italy secure Euro 2024 qualification against Ukraine, earning praise from the Italian newspapers.

The 26-year-old winger was forced to miss the first two international breaks of the season through injuries but was finally fit for Luciano Spalletti for the vital clashes with North Macedonia and Ukraine.

He shined again the former, netting a first-half brace to drive Italy to a key victory, putting them in a good spot heading into their decisive clash with Ukraine, who were also dreaming of a spot in next summer’s tournament in Germany.

Chiesa didn’t get himself on the scoresheet against Ukraine, but did work hard for Italy, taking four shots, creating two chances and winning 11 duels, adding an electric element to Spalletti’s squad.

La Gazzetta dello Sport had high praise for Chiesa, commenting on his impressive work and possible market value, writing: “The best again and by a distance. It’s fair to say that we don’t have any champions, but he is one. If Mudryk is worth €100m, then Chiesa? Every time he runs, it’s terror for Ukraine. He sacrifices himself like a full-back. And now at Juventus…?”

Tuttosport were equally impressed by the Juventus winger’s performance, noting his desire to drag the team forward and his dangerous forward forays, writing: “In the 7th minute he missed a sensational chance from the edge of the six-yard box by shooting high.

“He widened his front a lot and then tried to dribble with the risk of remaining a little outside the manoeuvre. But when he turns on, like when he triggered Frattesi on the half hour mark, he makes the difference.

“More alone with the bursts – lethal eh – than as a team, however. Imperious start to the second half to help his teammates.”
