Fatih Terim praised Maurizio Sarri and Lazio, but insisted Galatasaray ‘deserved’ to win their Europa League group.

The Turkish side knew that avoiding defeat at the Stadio Olimpico would send them through to the Europa League Round of 16 and came here looking for that result, playing a 0-0 draw.

The Emperor is still a fan favourite after his time at Fiorentina and Milan, admitting Italy remains a second home even 20 years later.

“I am very happy to be here. I think we deserved to win the group, because we had six games that were not easy, but overall we played very well and didn’t lose,” Terim told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a very strong group, Lazio are a great side and I really like and respect Sarri. We played in a very disciplined and compact fashion, it’s not easy to play Lazio in Rome, but we ultimately deserved the result.

“The Galatasaray squad is very young and I am very happy with how we are progressing. Lazio pressed harder in the second half, as expected, but didn’t create that many clear-cut scoring opportunities.”

Terim was asked if he continues to keep a close eye on Italian football and was enthusiastic about the current trends.

“I think Serie A is excellent, I see more attacking teams, more entertainment lately and when my game is finished, I immediately go to watch the Italian league. There’s a lot of quality in the Italian league now.”

  1. Congratulations to Galatasaray and Terim as a Lazio fan. The first match we played at their field was very unfortunate for us and they won 3 points because of Strakosha’s fault. I hope we meet them soon because all Lazio fans want revenge on Galatasaray.
