Former Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky hits back at Antonio Conte after the Italian tactician said that ban on Russian athletes is not fair: ‘Wake up, they have to carry collective guilt.’

The former Juventus and Inter coach caused controversy over the weekend by claiming that sanctions against Russian athletes are not fair.

“I repeat, it’s very sad that this serious situation, this war between Russia and Ukraine, is affecting football and the sporting [world]. To know that Russian athletes are banned from competitions is very sad,” he said on Saturday.

“I think it’s not fair. I know very well the work that they do every day for this competition. You have to pay for this situation, I think it’s not right.”

Former Ukrainian tennis player Stakhovsky, who has joined his country’s army following Russia’s invasion, has hit back at the Tottenham coach on Instagram, posting the screen of a private message he sent to Conte.

“I am not sure you understand the situation in Ukraine. Otherwise, I cannot imagine you would make a comment which would sound like you are sad about Russian athletes and businessmen,” he wrote.

“Millions of Ukrainians had to flee their homes because of the Russian invasion. Millions have to leave through hell in their own cities while Russian planes and artillery bombard them. Please wake up. Russians will have to carry collective guilt for the destruction and killings they are committing in Ukraine.”

  1. Collective guilt is such a disgraceful path to go down and leads to immense discrimination. Oh, 1 black person robbed a store so all black people should be punished. Get out of here with his terrible, bigoted statement Stakhovsky

  2. Conte , its not a war between Russia and Ukraine.

Its an out right invasion of a peaceful country.

Shameful, there is only one thing that will stop this disaster, Russian revolt against Putin and crew. Hi profile athletes need to play there part.

  3. Absurd. The people of Russia need to be collective guilty for the war promoted by the Russia govmt? Maybe we should guilt all the americans for all the wars theyve started and begin to ban their athletes too? Or maybe theres collective guilty on ukraine people in the war their external politics put them in? Wars are made by governments, common people just suffer, for the war or by the stupid xenophoby of those who just hate as “humanitarian thought”. Forza Conte!

  4. I haven’t seen any of them speaking out against their country’s invasion, crocodile tears and saying they want peace implies both countries have equal responsibility. That would send a huge message to their people, until they do so they are complicit.

  5. Okay, how do you punish Russia for their atrocities? Its either the west engaged them in the same war of you sanctioned them. Either you start war with Russia or you sanction them by denting their economy who pays at the end ? its still the innocent people. Putin wont feel a pinch of any sanction or war against Russia , its the citizen that will suffer the effect so what do we call that? its still collective impact, you cannot deal with the government without affecting the people, any issues Putin had with Ukraine government has nothing to with the citizen who only want to wake up and go about their business, but who are getting disposed and getting killed now? it is the innocent citizen, so the consequences will affect the innocent Russian too, Russian players should blame this on their goverment.
