Ten more COVID cases emerged during the last round of swab tests at Venezia, meaning the match against Inter is in doubt despite the new protocol approved by the Lega Serie A.

The newly-promoted side have now 14 first-team members positive. They are supposed to visit Inter at San Siro at 17.00 UK time on Saturday.

The club informed the “competent health authorities,” said Venezia, “and those positive have been promptly placed in isolation according to current regulations and will follow the procedures provided for in the health protocol.”

A new protocol was confirmed by the Government, Lega Serie A, FIGC and local health authorities (ASL) two days ago.

It says that a club can request the postponement of a fixture if 35 per cent of the squad tests positive for COVID-19.

The quota was set based on a 25-man squad, so nine players positive at any one time can activate the request to delay the game.

Venezia have not specified if those positive for COVID are footballers or staff members.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, eight Venezia players have COVID, meaning that one more case among the footballers would cause the match’s postponement.

Salernitana are in a similar situation ahead of the Derby of Campania against Napoli.

The Granata announced yesterday that another player has tested positive, taking the current total to eight.
