RB Leipzig coach Domenico Tedesco admits a 1-1 draw with Atalanta was ‘the right result’ in the Europa League quarter-final and is considering changes for the second leg.

The deadlock was broken by Luis Muriel and Andre Silva’s penalty was parried by Juan Musso, only for Davide Zappacosta to score an own goal moments later.

There were plenty of scoring opportunities at both ends, as the woodwork was rattled by Andre Silva, Mario Pasalic, Teun Koopmeiners and Dominik Szoboszlai.

“We will analyse this match and decide how to play the second leg,” said Italian-born Tedesco in his press conference.

The coach had already criticised Andre Silva after his performance in the Bundesliga at the weekend and this penalty error will not help his form.

“It was not a good penalty, but you also need a goalkeeper to make the save. We had already planned at half-time to introduce Emil Forsberg, as we wanted more possession in midfield.

“Ultimately, the draw is the right result, both teams tried to score a second goal. Atalanta run harder than any other team in Serie A, they are physically strong and take on opponents man for man.

“I haven’t seen the Muriel goal again yet, but our defence was set out and we should’ve been more concentrated to stop him getting into that position. Once there, he scored a great goal.”

RB Leipzig are now unbeaten in 13 competitive matches, but their home form is becoming a concern.

“We don’t think that’s a problem, if we can achieve our objectives by drawing at home and winning away, that’s fine with me. We can’t wait to play in front of our fans and want to win every game. It was a balanced encounter today and Atalanta pressed us very well.”

The second leg is in Bergamo next Thursday and the away goals rule no longer applies in the Europa League this season, so whoever wins will go through to the semi-final.

“We cannot just play on the counter-attack,” added Tedesco. “In the second half we showed that we can do well with possession, so we need to play the way we did building up to the penalty incident.”
