LaLiga chief Javier Tebas claims Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona are planning a new Super League ‘without the Premier League clubs,’ just as UEFA rulings would strengthen the English sides even more.

The Super League plan was announced in April 2021 and collapsed within 48 hours when most of the clubs who had signed up abandoned ship under immense pressure from their own fans, the media and in some cases players and coaches too.

Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only sides that remain committed to the Super League project, saying they were preparing a different version of it that would not be a closed door tournament.

According to Tebas, one of the Super League’s biggest critics, this could take a truly strange new twist.

“Florentino never loses, he is always coming up with something,” said Tebas at a press conference, referring to Real Madrid President Florentino Perez.

“The Super League is a concept that started many years ago and is more Florentino’s, not so much Real Madrid’s.

“It continues existing. They give a lot of important to what the EU could solve, but the European governments have already positioned themselves.

“They are working on another project, that will be a failure again, without the English teams, against UEFA, FIFA and the Premier League.”

‘Only Milan and Atalanta’ fit new UEFA FFP parameters

This comes after the New York Times revealed UEFA have agreed their new version of Financial Fair Play rules, limiting spending on football – so both wages and the amortisation of transfer fees – to 70 per cent of revenues.

Those rules would further benefit Premier League clubs because they have such a massive television rights deal that guarantees revenue every season.

So if the Spanish, Italian, German and French sides thought the Premier League would begin to dominate the Champions League, theoretically they could try to create their own breakaway tournament instead.

  1. Nothing super about it if the strongest teams in Europe refuse to join. You can´t exclude somebody who has refused to join in the first place.

  2. I am seeing guys here saying it would not be a Super League without the English teams.
That is wrong. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, Milan and Inter are WORLD FAMOUS Clubs.
Others like Ajax, Benfica, Porto, Marseille,Red Star are all historic clubs that are risking being uncompetitive In the Champions League with this new UEFA FFP ruling.

A league containing all big clubs from the rest of Continental Europe can still attract big TV deals.
There are other big marketable clubs on Europe outside England.
The fact that Tebas recognises that this new UEFA rule stops others from catching up is good for the Super League project.
Premier League has a lot of $$$$ compared to other leagues. If you stop others from trying to compete financially, the ESL will happen.

  3. The EPL is already a super league funded by blood and oil money. Go ahead with this asap for the future of the sport.

  4. Francesco and Carl… this is all about TV rights and market share. They want to exclude PL teams in order to gain some ground for TV rights. I have no doubt if PL clubs were financially struggling like others they wouldn’t pull themselves out of SL immediately.

  5. Bayern are against the Super League. So no Bayern and no English club? Doesn’t seem too Supery to me. More like the Italo-Spanish league. Bad idea.

  6. Great idea so the Super League will be just Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus with the farmers from Piemonte every week.

  7. 🤣🤣🤣 only the EPL clubs
What about the fact that the German & French teams also has stated they don’t want to be in it 🤣🤣🤣

    What are they planing 🤣🤣🤣
    Olympiakos & Maccabi Haifa 🤣🤣🤣

    What a “Super” league 🤣🤣🤣

Note: Yes I’m a Juve fan & I hate tge idea of giving all power to
Emperor Putin, sorry Perez & his loyal dominion Lukasjenko, sorry Agnelli.
Stop it & get out of Putin, sorry Perez mad fables 🥳🥴🤡 🤣🤣🤣

  8. European Super League has to go ahead ASAP.
Premiership Clubs are dominating in Europe and the longer the European Leagues stay as they are, they will all become feeder clubs to the Premiership, which is already a Super League.

  9. It’s true that something has to change – The PL is taking over the CL and EL and then it becomes a self perpetuating cycle of success for the PL – they win more money, they attract more money, they spend more money. A genuinely fair EU type league that does have promotion and relegation could work and attract support from across the EU. I don’t know how it would work because it would have to be fair and ensure that teams from, say, Poland, Greece, Denmark could at least get a look in. I think it’s inevitable in some form or other

  10. Italian clubs need to focus on themselves. Take ownership of their stadiums, market effectively and invest in youth and scouting programmes. It can and will be the best league in the world again.

  11. “and ensure thatcteams from say, Poland, Greece, Denmark could at least get a look in”

Isn’t that what UEFA CL is trying to achieve? 🙄
