Chievo hit back after the FIGC Prosecutor requested their relegation to Serie B, insisting there was a “gross miscalculation” of their transfer fees.

Today the Prosecutor put forth the charges of knowingly inflating the transfer fees of minor players by up to 9,000% when dealing with Cesena, a club that went bankrupt this week.

The request was a 15-point penalty for the 2017-18 season, which would see Chievo relegated and Crotone returned to Serie A.

Chievo released a statement insisting they “have always acted with respect to the law and federal norms, rejecting all accusations.”

They put forward documentation from experts Angelo Provasoli and Pietro Mazzola, highlighting that the Prosecutor’s calculations were off by €29.2m on a total of €32m in one of the deals.

“Chievo Verona announce we will proceed in any and all arenas for recognition of the serious damage derived from this gross miscalculation, unjustly discrediting the reputation of the club.”

Chievo’s lawyer Marco De Luca also spoke to news agency Ansa about the situation.

“I expected the FIGC Prosecutor to make a huge request of damages, because usually when they are wrong, they ask for much bigger punishment to sway the tribunal. The bigger the request, the weaker the proposal of deferment.

“The accusation is so fragile and contains some pretty foolish errors, even in just the numbers. I am confident the errors made by the Prosecutor will be sanctioned and sanctioned hard.

“The Prosecutor also twice refused to listen to the testimony of President Luca Campedelli, so cannot realistically proceed. It is completely unfounded and we can’t help but be confident.”

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the errors in the paperwork mean the entire investigation could be shelved.
