Atalanta trace their roots back to 1907, when they were founded by a group of students who attended the prominent public high school, the Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi. The club was named after the eponymous athlete who featured in Greek mythology, a huntress famous for her speed. This is where the nickname ‘La Dea’ comes from, which translates into English as ‘The Goddess’.
Based in the city of Bergamo, this is where the club gets its full name - Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio. It would take several years until the Italian Football Federation recognised La Dea, while there was an announcement in 1919 that only one club from Bergamo would be allowed to compete in the national championship.
As a result, Atalanta beat local rivals Bergamasca in a play-off match for the honour, although the two clubs then joined forces in a merger the following year. It was at this point Atalanta adopted their iconic black and blue colours. The club predominantly competed in the second tier during the 1920s, before winning promotion in 1928, the same year in which they moved into their current home in the Borgo Santa Caterina neighbourhood.
There would be an immediate relegation back down to the newly-formed Serie B, where they would spend another eight seasons before gaining promotion. The club have spent the majority of the time since in the top flight, although there was a significant period of decline in the 1970s.
That came after Atalanta won the Coppa Italia for the one and only time in their history in 1963. La Dea have finished as runners-up on four occasions since, including in both 2019 and 2021. Losing the 1987 final to Diego Maradona’s double-winning Napoli led to their participation in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup for the second time. Despite suffering relegation to Serie B at the end of the previous season, Atalanta went all the way to the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Mechelen.
There have been a number of European adventures since, with Gian Piero Gasperini leading La Dea into the Champions League for the first time in their history in 2019-20. Atalanta went all the way to the quarter-finals, before also reaching the knockout rounds the following year. The wait continues for that elusive first Scudetto though.
The Atalanta kit has been black and blue since their merger with Bergamasca in 1920. As a club with such a devoted following, the latest Atalanta kit release is always keenly anticipated. Atalanta have been blessed with many wonderful players down the years. As a club known for its attacking football, it’s fitting that forward Angelo Domenghini goes down as one of La Dea’s most notable figures. The Italian began his career with a four-year spell in Bergamo, where he scored a hat-trick in the 1963 Coppa Italia final to deliver Atalanta’s one and only piece of major silverware.
There have been many other stellar names who started their careers with the Nerazzurri, including the likes of Roberto Donadoni, Alessio Tacchinardi and Gaetano Scirea. Former captain and record appearance maker Gianpaolo Bellini spent his entire career with La Dea, while Cristiano Doni is Atalanta’s record goalscorer after netting 112 times in 323 appearances. He is the only player to have reached 100 goals for Atalanta, with Duvan Zapata currently second on the list.
Current Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was the club’s 70th managerial appointment in June 2016, and arguably the most important. Gasperini has completely changed La Dea’s fortunes, turning Atalanta into one of the most exciting sides in Serie A to watch. Atalanta are also Champions League and Europa League regulars, with Gasperini leading the Nerazzurri into Europe in every season in charge of the club to date.
Atalanta had never finished higher in Serie A than their fifth-place finish back in 1948, but Gasperini led La Dea to fourth in his first campaign. After finishing seventh the following year, Atalanta then recorded three straight third-place finishes to secure Champions League football. The next step is securing a major piece of silverware, which Paolo Tabanelli managed to do in his only season at the club, the triumphant 1963 Coppa Italia-winning campaign. The likes of Marcello Lippi, Cesare Prandelli and Antonio Conte have also had spells at the helm but failed to win any silverware.
Atalanta’s fiercest rivalry is with Brescia, a club less than 40 miles away along the A4. The teams contest the Derby Lombardo when they meet, with the rivalry stemming all the way back to historical feuding between the cities of Bergamo and Brescia in the Middle Ages.
The Nerazzurri also count Torino among their most intense rivalries, along with fellow Turin side Juventus. The likes of Inter, Lazio, Milan, Napoli and Roma are hardly considered friends of Atalanta either, unlike Umbrian outfit Ternana, with supporters of the two clubs sharing a long-standing camaraderie.
