Tavecchio: ‘Thohir is welcome’

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio says Inter chief Erick Thohir is bringing a very welcome investment to Italian football.

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio says Inter chief Erick Thohir is bringing a very welcome investment to Italian football.

The Italian FA President was caught in the storm of critics after his now infamous words about ‘Opti Pobà’ previous to his election in the summer. But now he can see the benefits for Italian football from abroad.

“I say that in the case of foreign investors like Erick Thohir, if they spend €100m cash and then they guarantee for €300m, one should always open the doors wide,” Tavecchio told Radio Crc.

“I also enjoy a great rapport with President De Laurentiis, we are often in touch. One should erect a monument for him.”

Napoli have invested a lot themselves and Tavecchio said he was happy to see them back in contention in the League where he predicts an open battle for the title.

“It’s a beautiful lottery and I am happy that also Napoli and Lazio are up there. There are no predictable results and that’s the beauty of it.

“I really hope that Juventus, Roma, Napoli and Lazio can bring some enthusiasm. Milan and Inter have their problems but they must fight back, while Genoa are the oldest club in Italy so it was natural they would be back there.

“I am also happy about recoveries of Bologna, Sampdoria and other cities.”
