Blatter announced yesterday that he will stand down as President of FIFA, as a corruption scandal continues to engulf the organisation.

The 79-year-old was only re-elected at last week’s congress, defeating challenger Prince Ali bin-Al Hussein.

“It was a very strange FIFA congress,” Tavecchio admitted, speaking to assembled media at Coverciano.

“There wasn’t a true understanding of the events which had taken place, even on the second day.

“Everything took place in a climate of mistrust, but there was no talk of anything so I decided to vote in concert with UEFA [for Prince Ali].

“I feel sorry on a personal level, I’ve welcomed Blatter to Italy many times, it was a difficult decision, but without clarity I couldn’t do anything else.

“Now we need to re-write the rules, but it would anachronistic for people who have resigned for reasons such as this to re-write them.

“Our candidate is [UEFA President] Platini, if he wants to put his name forward.

“Qatar 2022? The executive committee will decide.”

Tavecchio also addressed reports that Italy CT Antonio Conte will resign if he is called again as part of a match-fixing probe.

“The indictment is not a conviction.

“For four years now Conte has been hooked by the judiciary, I’m not saying we need a rushed trial, but a quick one? Yes.

“We rely on him, he’s part of the movement to renew our football.”
