The new head of Italian football’s governing body’s successful election campaign was heavily called into question after he made racist remarks about African players during the build up to the vote.

However, in a brief conversation with reporters, the 71-year-old highlighted his role in helping to allow thousands of non-EU players to become professional footballers and called for an end to people bringing up his recent ‘gaffe.’

“A measure created by myself allowed 12,000 non-EU players to play football, people who then came to professional prominence,” Tavecchio is quoted as saying by Ansa.

“But then my gaffe is immediately talked about. I’ve said sorry, but it’s the facts that matter.”
