FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio hints at support for Michel Platini, saying the federation will support ‘the UEFA candidate’.

Platini is the President of European football’s governing body, and announced earlier today that he will run for the Presidency of FIFA at the extraordinary conference on February 26.

His position means the former Juventus midfielder will surely receive the backing of UEFA, and the head of the Italian federation says the FIGC will support the UEFA candidate.

“I’ve talked with Platini,” Tavecchio told reporters at an amateur League event.

“Italy will support the UEFA candidate for the Presidency of FIFA, and if that’s Platini then we’ll support Platini.”

Current chief Sepp Blatter is standing down from the organisation, but his opponent in the May election is not sure Platini is the right man to replace him.

“Platini is not good for FIFA,” Prince Ali bin al Hussein said in a statement.

“Football fans and players deserve better. FIFA is engulfed in scandal, we must stop doing things as usual.

“The practice of backroom under-the-table deals must end. I believe the voices of the individual federations must be heard. In the coming week, I’ll be consulting with them about what’s best for football.

“What is clear is that FIFA needs new, independent leadership, untainted by the practices of the past.”
