The head of Italian Coaches claims Carlo Tavecchio was hung out to dry by the FIGC and that Giampiero Ventura failed due to not handling pressure.

Tavecchio and Ventura vacated their positions as FIGC chief and Italy CT respectively after the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the World Cup next summer, but Renzo Ulivieri was particularly disappointed to see the former fall for the ‘traps laid out’.

Tavecchio and Ventura vacated their positions as FIGC chief and Italy CT respectively after the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for the World Cup next summer, but Renzo Ulivieri was particularly disappointed to see the former fall for the ‘traps laid out’.

“Over the years, there were two Tavecchios,” the former Bologna and Napoli boss told ItaSportPress.

“The first was somewhat naive, hit by huge controversy after some gaffes, which were exploited.

“The second, who I agreed with, was important for the restructuring and financial reorganisation of the FIGC.

“Over the last few days, they laid out traps for him. Everyone competed to escape and distance themselves [from the problems in Italian football].

“I was close to him, I stood up for him. I feel sorry for those who would accept a medal for having lost the President his job.

“An institutional path had to be followed and Tavecchio had to resign without any pressure, but in front of a federal council, completed by Serie A and B, it was a cunning trick.

“Ventura? I won’t judge him. I liked him until the Spain game. After that, there was too much pressure.

“Whoever occupies a role like [that of Italy CT] must handle it, and he didn’t succeed.

“We’re out of the World Cup, it's a very hard thing to take and you have to acknowledge it with sincerity.”
