Tavecchio had hired Ventura for the Italy job and was in charge when the Azzurri lost the 2018 World Cup play-off at San Siro in November 2017.

“I return here in order to encourage Italy. My support for the Nazionale will never be lacking,” assured Tavecchio.

“I have the Italy team in my heart and I resigned my post out of love for the Nazionale. Nobody else resigned, so someone had to take responsibility.

“It was a dramatic situation after the World Cup failure.”

Ventura refused to quit the Italy job after that play-off disaster against Sweden, yet he resigned just four games into his new job as Coach of Chievo.

“It’s very sad, I didn’t think it would end this way. The real surprise is that he resigned when nobody asked him to…”
