The head of Italian football’s governing body has long been an advocate of reducing the number of teams in the League but has encountered opposition to his plans.
Though he initially intended to bring about the change ‘by 2016,’ he now accepts it could take up to five more years.

Though he initially intended to bring about the change ‘by 2016,’ he now accepts it could take up to five more years.
“It would bring an increase in the technical level of the teams and the fans who turn up,” Tavecchio said when questioned on the benefits of an 18-team League.
“This week I will meet the Leagues in order to give a ‘gentle push’ to the initiative, but it will not be easy.
“Clearly it cannot all be reduced in one year, but it needs a four or five-year plan.”
Tavecchio then revealed what he believes would be the ideal structure for the top three tiers of Italian football.
“18 for Serie A, 20 in Serie B and two groups of 20 in the Lega Pro.”
The 73-year-old also discussed Sunday night’s match between Inter and Juventus, saying the Nerazzarri’s 2-1 win is good for the League.
“They told me that San Siro broke the spectator record, it makes me pleased.
“I have always had a soft spot for the Nerazzurri, now the League is becoming interesting and Inter will have their chances like everyone else.
“The League needs its big cities and big stages, which need to be in the mix to win.”
