The 34-year-old moved to Milan from Olympique Lyonnais in September and has stepped in for Gigio Donnarumma twice – once in Serie A and once in the Europa League – so far.

After 11 years at the national team and representing Romania in Euro 2016, the goalkeeper has decided to step aside and let the younger players get a chance to guard the net at international level.

“I started thinking seriously about when I would retire from the national team earlier this year,” Tatarusanu told Romanian FA’s official website.

“I have been playing for Romania for more than a decade, with honour and pride. I was grateful every time I was called up and for being able to sing the hymn, wearing the most important shirt for me.

“The shirt I have dreamed of wearing since I was a child. But I will soon be 35 and in the last few months the belief has grown that it was time to make this decision.

“I just think it’s time for other Romanian goalkeepers to defend the national team goal and for me to step back.

“We have young goalkeepers with great prospects, we have experienced goalkeepers who can face this role right now."
