Milan legend Mauro Tassotti believes the Rossoneri must sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window although Heorhiy Sudakov would be an ideal reinforcement in attack.

The Rossoneri are facing an injury crisis in defence with Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Marco Pellegrino, Mattia Caldara and Malick Thiaw all out of action.

Stefano Pioli played Theo Hernandez as a centre-back in a 3-1 win over Frosinone on Saturday, but Tassotti hopes the Frenchman will soon return to playing in his natural role.

“He did well, but I’d like to see him play wide again as soon as possible. His pace is too important,” the former Rossoneri full-back told Gazzetta.

Should Milan sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window?

“I believe a new central defender is fundamental,” Tassotti replied.

“They have only one left [Fikayo Tomori]. Then, they need to decide on Jovic because they can’t continue asking Olivier Giroud to play three high-level games each week.”

Tassotti’s interview was published in Tuesday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport before reports emerged that the Rossoneri are close on the verge of signing 17-year-old striker Matija Popovic and Betis bull-back Juan Miranda.

If Tassotti had to sign a new player in attack for Milan, who would he get?

“I would sign Sudakov who I coached with the Ukraine national team. I’ve heard rumours about him and I think he’s an interesting player. Of course, I know it’s difficult to bring him here from Ukraine.”

How about Stefano Pioli? His contract expires in June 2025, does he deserve to remain in charge?

“Of course he does, they can’t expect more than he’s doing,” replied Tassotti.

“He won a title and increased the value of players when nobody asked him to do so.”

However, the former defender believes Milan owner Gerry Cardinal was wrong to part company with Paolo Maldini last summer.

“To me, it was a mistake to send him and Massara away, they had obtained great results, but those who put in the money can do what they want.”

Which is Milan’s target this season?

“They will fight until the end for a Champions League spot and then we’ll see.”

Rafael Leao will soon return to action after a muscle injury, but could be more decisive for the Rossoneri once he gets back onto the pitch?

“Sometimes he is criticised due to his body language, which doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the right commitment,” argued Tassotti.

“He plays to be nice, but he will soon understand that he can score a goal in every game, I am convinced he will mature soon.”
