Lazio director Igli Tare insists the club’s fans were not guilty of racist chanting in last night’s match with Bayer Leverkusen.

Announcements were made over the PA system in the stadium on two occasions, during the 1-0 win, warning the match could be called off as a section of supporters appeared to make monkey noises at Jonathan Tah, Wendell and Karim Bellarabi.

“The spectators didn’t racially abuse any player,” Tare told German media after the match.

“The referee misunderstood the chants. Our fans shouted ‘ooh’ to frighten and intimidate our opponents, not in a racist way.”

The Biancocelesti had to play two of their 2012-13 Europa League ties behind closed doors after being sanctioned by UEFA for racist chanting.
