Legendary former Italy midfielder Marco Tardelli spoke very highly of Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu in a recent radio interview, highlighting the Turk’s importance to Simone Inzaghi over the last few months.

Tardelli was a guest on Rai 2’s programme 90. Minuto on Monday, reviewing the weekend’s action from Serie A. Among the topics of discussion was his former side Inter’s potential challenge for the 2023-24 league title.

Admitting that Inzaghi has a very promising squad at his disposal, there is one player in particular who Tardelli believes is worthy of special praise.

That is Calhanoglu, who, again, put in a fine display during the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 win over Empoli on Sunday evening. “He is very important, like all the players in the Inter midfield against Empoli. Inzaghi has created a high quality department,” the 69-year-old said.

He continued by adding that: “Inter have a great squad and even better management.”

Tardelli also went on to suggest that keeping Inzaghi on despite a rocky start last season has proved to be an excellent decision looking at both Serie A and the Champions League.

Following Saturday’s result against Empoli, Inzaghi and Inter have extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table and are already three points clear after just five games.

Along with Lecce, the Nerazzurri are also one of the only two sides in the division yet to lose in the league so far this season.
