Japhet Tanganga has recently been linked with a move to Milan and the move to Italy might be worth the plunge for the Englishman, if the fates of Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham are anything to go by, writes Apollo Heyes.

Tottenham have reportedly set a €12-15m asking price for the 23-year-old defender and a move away might be exactly what he needs to relaunch his career. Tanganga only made six Premier League appearances last season under Antonio Conte before he suffered a serious knee injury and it seems like it’ll be difficult for him to reclaim a starting spot in North London.

The perception of English players in Serie A has changed significantly over the last decade, with many remembering the fairly lacklustre moves of Joe Hart, Ashley Cole and Micah Richards to the Italian peninsula.

In the last few years, however, players like Tomori at Milan or Abraham at Roma have shown that young Englishmen may find the perfect place to prove their qualities in Serie A. Of course, there’s no guarantee of instant success, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles found in the Italian capital, but there’s clearly opportunities to impress.

Moving to Milan could give Tanganga the right environment to show his qualities and add some new elements to his game, and Tomori’s presence will only make the adaption easier. Considering that he’s not set to play an important role under Conte next season, the move seems like it would be worth the risk.

  1. I really think Tomori was/is an anomaly from the typical English center-backs. They are often terrible defenders.

Maybe borrow him with option to buy and we’ll see at the end of the season if he’s good enough.

(P.S. : I can’t for the life of me figure out why the word “l.o.a.n” is a trigger for football-Italia. You type that and your comment won’t go through!)
