Oscar Tabarez suggests it is not unreasonable to list Uruguay’s task against Costa Rica, England and Italy as the World Cup’s ‘Group of Death’.

The quartet of nations make up Group D of the competition this summer and the South American side’s Coach acknowledges progression will be no easy task.

“It is no exaggeration to call Costa Rica, England and Italy the Group of Death, whilst it is difficult for us and our opponents,” Tabarez told A Folha de Sao Paulo this week.

“It is no exaggeration to call Costa Rica, England and Italy the Group of Death, whilst it is difficult for us and our opponents,” Tabarez told A Folha de Sao Paulo this week.

“But this can be a motivation – if we can progress, then we will be much stronger. It was like this in 2010, when no-one thought we would reach the final four.

“In football, nothing is impossible, and the boundary between success and failure is sometimes very thin.

“The heat and potential fan protests during the tournament? It is a problem not only for us, but for all the national teams at the World Cup.

“Brazil are one of the major powers on the planet, and the protests are part of a social reality, it takes times before the wealth can be distributed in an equitable manner.”
