Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny understands Nicolò Fagioli must be punished for placing bets, but urges the authorities in future to ‘make help and treatment a priority’ for gambling addiction.

It kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Fagioli begins his seven-month ban for illegal gambling, but is in the stadium to cheer on his teammates this evening and continues to train at the Continassa centre.

“Obviously, we are very sad for Nicolò. The lad made a mistake, he will pay the consequences and I think it is time we think carefully about how to treat players who suffer from gambling addiction,” Szczesny told DAZN.

“As the rules stand now, Nicolò knew the rules, he knew the consequences and it is right that he is suspended, but in future I feel we need to make help and treatment a priority and not just punishment.

“It is not just because this is my colleague, but I think it is time we think about the right consequences for these situations.”

Fagioli is the only player to have been given his plea bargain verdict so far and could make it back for the final game of this season against Monza.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has also given his deposition and is expected to receive his ban of at least a year over the next few days.

Both sides are dealing with numerous problems, including Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez sitting out bans, while Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic are only fit for the bench.

Curiously, there are two USMNT players starting for each team this evening, including Timothy Weah, the son of Milan legend George.
