Former Bologna midfielder Matias Svanberg has ‘no words’ to describe the importance of Sinisa Mihajlovic in his career: ‘He made me understand what it takes to improve as a footballer.’

Mihajlovic, a former Bologna, Sampdoria, and Milan coach, died on November 16 in Rome. He had been diagnosed with leukaemia twice in the last three years.

“He was one of a kind, I worked with him for three and a half years and there are no words to describe his importance for my career,” Svanberg, who joined Wolfsburg last summer, told Corriere di Bologna.

“Reactions to his death made me understand even more how big he was. He trusted me, making me understand what it takes to improve as a footballer. There are never quiet days, you must always be entirely focused.

“I have so many memories. It was such a long and nice trip. When I moved to Germany, he wished me the best of luck and told me that our spell together had been extraordinary. We split as two friends rather than two people who worked together.”
