Genoa confirm Stefano Sturaro went under the knife today to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The midfielder is expected to be out of action for five to six months.

It is yet another devastating blow for his career, as the 26-year-old made just five Serie A appearances this season, scoring one goal against his old club Juventus.

Sturaro has barely featured over the past three seasons, suffering from knee problems, tendonitis and a torn Achilles tendon.

A statement released by Genoa, who he joined in January, confirmed the operation was performed by Professor Pier Paolo Mariani at the Villla Stuart clinic in Rome.

Like Milan defender Mattia Caldara, who had the same surgery in the same clinic today, Sturaro should be out for five to six months.
