Manchester United’s hopes of signing Kevin Strootman suffer another blow with reports Roma are offering a contract extension.

The Dutch midfielder has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, where he’d reunite with manager Louis van Gaal.

However, today Sport Mediaset suggests Roma have proposed a contract extension until June 2020 with the promise he can take the captain’s armband in future.

That would be a surprise, as Daniele De Rossi is next in the pecking order behind Francesco Totti.

It is therefore also seen as a sign that rumours De Rossi is considering a switch to America’s MLS are gathering pace.

Strootman’s Roma career so far has been beset by injury problems, as the 25-year-old was out of action from March to November 2014 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

He then sprained the same knee and had to undergo surgery again in January 2015, ending his season six months early.

Meanwhile, there is some good news for Roma, as Leandro Castan is training with the squad and could be given the all-clear to resume his playing career after a check-up on Monday.

The defender had a very delicate operation to remove a cavernoma – abnormal cluster of blood cells – in his brain in September and has not played all season.
