The Dutch international has missed most of the past two seasons with persistent knee problems, but after a third operation in September last year, he’s ready to return to his best.

“Of course I had hard times, especially before my surgery last year,” Strootman admitted to Voetbal International.

“I’d done everything possible to get back to fitness again, everything, but I could only get to 20 per cent. That was last year. At times like that I doubted I’d get back to my level.

“Then I started playing for the Roma Primavera and everything went in a different direction. My knee is fine, the fear is gone.

“I’m doing all the exercises to make my knee as strong as possible. It’s good to get back to being a footballer.

“I wanted to get back to the level I was at before my injury.”
