Roma Coach Rudi Garcia says that midfielder Kevin Strootman must regain confidence as well as fitness as he recovers from a knee injury.

The Dutchman suffered a cruciate ligament injury during the Lupi’s defeat to Napoli in March, but has recently returned to training and reports have suggested the 24-year-old could be back as soon as mid-November.

“We’re slowly doing everything we can do get the injured players back,” Garcia has reflected to reporters today ahead of the Sampdoria game tomorrow.

“We still have the players to be competitive in the League.

“Kevin is recovering well physically, he started playing in training matches this week.

“He has to regain his confidence after a major injury, he still doesn’t change direction.

“I think that when he can do that with the ball is when there will be a major injection of confidence in his recovery.”

Despite missing Strootman, along with others such as Douglas Maicon, Garcia resisted the temptation to blame the Giallorossi’s 7-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on fitness and injuries.

“Maybe we went into the game with Bayern at the worst time, with players who were tired or returning from injury.

“What it shows is that we had done well previously to win games, even with these problems. Now we have not only a good team on paper, but players in better condition.

“But I’m not one who cries because he had players out, that would be a serious error.

“I’m focused and confident about who can play.”
