Andrea Stramaccioni joked about the defensive howler that allowed Roma to beat Udinese. “I don’t know who to get angry with!”

The Friulani had taken the lead and threatened to go 2-0 up, hitting the woodwork before half-time, but were beaten 2-1 at the Olimpico.

“I think Udinese played the game we wanted to. We defended in a balanced fashion, but should’ve made more of the great scoring opportunities in the first half,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The regrets aren’t just that we didn’t take those chances, but also that we didn’t finalise the counter-attack when it was two against two. Moments later Roma scored and it changed the inertia of the match.

“The Giallorossi have very aggressive centre-backs, but they do leave you some spaces round the back. We basically sacrificed our strikers to bring out the Roma defenders and then attacked them from behind.”

The decisive goal was bizarre, as Thomas Heurtaux failed to cut out a cross and Silvan Widmer hit a fresh air clearance, allowing Vasilis Torosidis to tap in.

“I liked Udinese and we only lost because of an accident that frankly from the bench I didn’t even understand. I need to work out who to get angry with!

“Widmer has just turned 20 and he had a great game. It’s a shame, as that error changed the balance of the match, but our project is also about helping young players grow and learn.”

Roma were forced to win this evening in order to stay one point in front of Lazio going into the Derby della Capitale.

“I think Roma played with extra pressure from last night’s result. Any Rome Derby is going to be tense. Roma can afford to get a draw, but I don’t think they’ll aim towards that.”

Udinese secured their Serie A safety this season and their new restructured stadium will open next term.

“The best compliments we received from Roma players and Rudi Garcia are that the team has grown since the last time we played them.

“Now we’ll have to see what choices the club makes to improve the squad, but we fielded many youngsters today and that is how Udinese work.

“We all want to see an ambitious Udinese, the new stadium will help and we are all working to do better next year.”
