The midfielder retired from national duty in October 2011 after his nation had failed to qualify for Euro 2012.
However, the former Lazio man has admitted that he could soon be at the disposal of Serbia boss Sinisa Mihajlovic.
“I’ve left the door open for a return,” the 34-year-old noted. “We’ll have to see. I’ll need to be in good physical shape.
“I’ll play a few games for Inter and then we’ll look at the situation. There are 40 days until the Croatia tie on March 22, an important game for World Cup qualification.
“I’ll have the final say, but, I’ll repeat, I have to be at 100 per cent.”
Stankovic has only just returned to action after being sidelined since May with an Achilles tendon problem.
