“I’m excited. I like challenges, I don’t run away from my responsibilities. It will be difficult, every job in this world is difficult,” the 41-year-old told Novosti.

“Imagine the privilege I have now and how honoured I am to have the opportunity to coach Red Star. I have to thank the people at the club.

“I had a good contract with Inter, I took charge of all the youth levels and I put together a scouting programme.

“A month and a half ago, I wouldn’t have said that I would become coach of Red Star.”

Stankovic replaces Vladan Milojevic, who resigned last week despite leading the team to successive League titles and on course for another.

The former Inter and Lazio midfielder was a Red Star player between 1995 and 1998 before joining the Biancocelesti.
