Dejan Stankovic is reportedly meeting with Sampdoria officials this evening and the club hope to secure his signature as their new coach.

The club sacked Marco Giampaolo on Sunday after a disastrous start to the season, which saw them pick up only two points in eight rounds.

A 3-0 home defeat to Monza proved the final straw and the tactician was axed.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Sportitalia and more, Stankovic is currently in Milan and meeting with Sampdoria chiefs to discuss the terms.

They hope he will put pen to paper and sign on tonight.

Other options had included Claudio Ranieri and Roberto D’Aversa, who were both on the Samp bench in recent years.

This will be Stankovic’s first coaching job in Italy, but the 44-year-old Serbian spent most of his playing career in Serie A with Lazio from 1998 to 2004, then Inter until his retirement in 2013.

He was then assistant manager at Udinese, team co-ordinator at Inter, a UEFA advisor before becoming coach of Red Star Belgrade from December 2019 to August 2022.
