Dejan Stankovic admits “it’s only natural the fans get angry and jeer” after Inter’s home defeat to Novara.

The midfielder had been out of action since December 18, but returned to the starting XI in today’s 1-0 home loss.

“I am very disappointed with this defeat,” Stankovic told Inter Channel. “It’s particularly galling, as I couldn’t wait to get on to the field, fight alongside my teammates and try to get back on track after some negative results.

“Instead we suffered a heavy defeat, we cannot deny that. We could’ve done with a bit more luck, as the ball refused to cross the line.

“I was afraid that this tendon injury would require surgery, but the Inter medical staff were spectacular. I was so happy and fired up to be back in the starting XI and expected a happy afternoon, but it wasn’t the case.

“It’s not the first time this has happened to us, but this squad has character and with that we will emerge from these situations. I’ve been through many tough times, but we cannot be afraid and we cannot give up now.”

Some suggest the Nerazzurri are not putting in as much effort as in previous years and the fans at one stage chanted ‘go to work.’

“If someone left the field today anything less than tired, believe me I’d be the first to tear their arms off,” replied Stankovic.

“It’s disappointing for everyone, especially President Massimo Moratti and the supporters. We gave our all but, with all due respect for Novara, we shouldn’t have lost at home to the bottom of the table club. It’s only natural the fans get angry and jeer after that. They expect a reaction.”
