The Stadio della Roma has been ruled in the public interest today, with 28 votes in favour and nine against, so planning can progress.

This project to build an arena has been hit by numerous delays, problems, controversies and rewrites, including the removal of two tower blocks as part of the original plan.

This afternoon, the Assemblea Capitolina formally voted on recognising the project was in the public interest.

There were nine votes against, but 28 in favour and one abstained, so the motion was passed.

It’s still a long way off seeing the Stadio della Roma built, but is an important milestone.

Now the Regione has to have its vote on whether the stadium is in the public interest too.
